Anonymization

Replace detected data with generic, irreversible placeholders.

Anonymization is the processing mode that replaces each detected data point with a generic marker. The original data is lost: the operation is irreversible. This is the safest mode when sharing a document with a third party.

When anonymization is properly implemented, the GDPR no longer applies to the anonymized data.

Usage

  1. Open the text editor from the Plain Text page or the file processor from the Sessions page
  2. Select “anonymization” as the processing type from the Overview tab of the session
  3. Paste your content or import your files

How It Works

Each detected entity is replaced by a tag corresponding to its type:

  • Marie Dupont, Thomas Martin → [PR]
  • marie@dupont.fr → [MAIL]
  • https://thomas-martin-avocat.fr → [URL]
  • 06 12 34 56 78 → [PHON]

Two occurrences of the same value do not share a common tag: each occurrence receives a generic tag. The document remains readable, but any attempt at correlation is impossible. In the example above, Marie Dupont and Thomas Martin cannot be distinguished.

When to Use Anonymization?

  • Public sharing of a document
  • Archiving beyond the legally required retention period
  • Sharing with a third party who must not be able to—or does not need to—distinguish between the parties
  • Creating a database of reusable templates and precedents

Alternative: Pseudonymization

If you need to preserve consistency across different entities (for example, when sharing data with a third party for analysis) or to be able to restore the data later, use the pseudonymization mode instead.

Pseudonymization is one of the measures recommended by the GDPR to mitigate risks associated with the processing of personal data.
